  1. You listed Sloan “one chord to another” as a release date for February 12. This is from Wikipedia, the EASIEST source of information.
    One Chord to Another
    Sloan
    Studio album by Sloan
    Released
    June 12, 1996 (Canada)
    March 11, 1997 (International)
How and why do you keep getting things so wrong? It’s mind boggling. Tighten it up. I’m almost done with you, and I’m going to miss having this source… but it’s easy to find that you continue to disappoint and mislead with just the slightest double check. Often. Please tighten it up.

    • John:

Perhaps you didn’t see my January 18 reply to your January 17 comment, nor those to your other, earlier comments.

I have been building my several databases of rock and pop music factoids for nearly ten years. Over that time, I have come to use multiple different sources of data, particularly for album release dates. On any given day I am referring to AllMusic, Discogs, 45Cat, RateYourMusic, Last.fm, MusicBrainz, Billboard and other music sites, plus record label and artists’ official websites, fan blogs, Wikipedia and other sources.

Through years of experience, I can assure you of two things: (1) Wikipedia is NOT very reliable and should always be verified, and (2) Discogs is more reliable than others, but not close to perfect. You may find Wikipedia the “EASIEST” (in your own words), but you are making a grave error relying on that as a sole source.

In the case of Sloan’s One Chord To Another, it was released in Canada on 6/12/1996, exactly as Wikipedia says. But if you’d read down farther, you’d have seen that it “was not released until 1997 in the United States.” Wikipedia shows the international release of March 11, 1997. My check of other sources finds both 2/12/1997 and 3/11/1997. Discogs, a site run by collectors and aficionados for whom accurate data is an absolute, shows 2/12/1997. Two other sources confirm that. I went with 2/12/1997 as my US release date.

Sleuthing, deduction and cognitive reasoning are involved with determining the appropriate date to enter in my databases. Is my data perfect? Certainly not. But I will bet that 95% of my album release dates are reliable. I know because I have checked, double- and triple-checked the inputs for years.
Please desist from calling my work “so randomly, terribly, repeatedly and easily provably wrong” when you mistakenly assume Wikipedia is accurate. You are relying on an unreliable source for your accusations.

      Cheers, Dr. Rock

  2. Per your email…
Wikipedia is NOT the only fact check I use. I check lots of band websites, official Facebook and Instagram pages, dedicated fan groups and more. The frequency of inaccuracies drove me to contact you. It got to me.

If I questioned every single thing I have seen about release dates that was easily provably wrong every time with a singular message to you,  I’d be doing your work. There has been a very high rate of error, I only check the albums I like. I don’t mean to be mean. I won’t comment again.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the response.
